UNDERTOWN

Climb into your vehicle of choice - A '57 convertible, a goat drawn chariot, a glistening dirigible, V.W. van or a flying saucer. Shoot your way through the beckoning night. You can't make out much beyond your headlights or flaming eye or whatever it is that's revealing the small, lighted path before you. Whether it's lines in the highway or the tops of buildings, there is much more you can't see than you can. The denizens of the dark, the truth from the fiction, the hidden motivations, the secret places and the beings that turn the wheels from their den in the shadows - from the inside.

It's not happening out in the daylight. It's not happening under the Big Top. It's not happening before your eyes but behind them or beyond them. Ride long enough and you'll see the forgotten and the fragmented. The hiders and the go-seekers. You may find the metaphorical socks and who snitched them from the dryer.

You may find yourself in Undertown..

SOUL SHADOW TIME

You wanted to tell me something
I couldn't hear it for the wind
Puzzles and playthings
Streetlights blinking red in unison

I need a hope
To hang on to
Some way to cope
A voice  that's true
A light in the dark
To guide me through
This soul shadow time

Driving might get you started
Arriving at where you're s'posed to be
The signs are all backwards
The roads are all turning back and underneath

I need a hope
To hang on to
Some way to cope
A voice  that's true
A light in the dark
To guide me through
This soul shadow time

Believe it
The Tiger talks
And will sing
Hallelujah
For you

PILE OF DIRT

I woke up
Alone tonight
Thinking 'bout
The speed of light
The world
I meant to see
Slipping farther
Away from me

You know my life ain't worth
A pile of dirt
A pile of dirt
Could grow daisies

A rabbit's foot
A broken glass
Down under the overpass
Just a speck
Beneath the stars
Invisible to the
Passing cars

You know my life ain't worth
A pile of dirt
A pile of dirt
Could grow daisies

She walked away
When reality called her
You've got to know
When to go

UNDERTONE

Undertone

Wailing unheard like a ghost trombone
Droning choir of silver monks unknown
A shadow symphony, surrounding me

Undertone
Laughing river over secret stone
Throws us together when we're all alone
The current is strong, It won't be long

A hidden poem from the rain and shine

A gentle tugging when your eyes meet mine

Undertone
Something humming 'neath the skin and bone
Serpent lurking in a deeper zone
It's always been there, It's everywhere

CROSS THE RIVER

Tonight it's my play
Banish the day
Orpheus returns
Feeling pretty burned
Overcome, dull and gray

Gonna follow the sound
Beneath the ground
Drink the devil's brew
Dance a jig or two
Beelzebub's buying a round

I want to cross the river
Where the shadows grow
To the medicine show
I want to cross the river
Want to double down
In Under Town

I want to cross the river

I love to hear my feet
On a midnight street
Trade a word or two
With the wrecking crew
Or anybody that I meet

The lights are much brighter
When you pull an all-nighter
Underneath the sun
I feel like I'm no one
My mind feels so much tighter

I want to cross the river
Where the shadows grow
To the medicine show
I want to cross the river
Want to double down
In Under Town

I want to cross the river

BUSINESS AS USUAL

He's an old lion hunting
For one final  deer
Gonna cost him his pride
That slender neck and velvet hide
He drains another beer

Streetlights blink on the savanna,
Cubs cry somewhere, alone
The gazelle lies down on the far side of town
And a dream is gone

What does it mean
What is it worth
It's just business as usual

On planet Earth

An army of ghosts
Creatures of the garbage can
Heed the satellites
In the dead of night
More memory than man

Seeking redemption, forgotten in a haunted state
In a poisoned oasis a crossroad glows
On a figure eight

What does it mean
What is it worth
It's just business As Usual
On planet Earth

HINDENBURG

All of this time
I heard it coming
Blowing around
Under the chairs

Clearing the table
I hear the fridge humming
My coffee gets cold
Like the twilight air

I'm queuing up
For the Hindenburg

Itching for answers
Scratching for change
Things I believe in
Are causing me pain

I'd hold you forever
Won't ever leave
Sacrifice anything
To get you to see

I'm queuing up
For the Hindenburg

It would be easier to face
If I could erase
Your smell and your taste
The thrill of the chase

I'd put it all down
To chemistry
The repetition
Of history

I'd just ditch it, I'd let it go

I'm queuing up
For the Hindenburg

TOGETHER ALONE

She said,” Your poetry lends itself to 3/4 time."
I said,” Good poetry should always be timeless."
A maraschino cherry in an Amaretto sour
She said, "It also should remain rhyme-less."

The windows can't hold back the cold infiltration
Or the night just outside that's falling
She said,” You can't light a fire with a book of wet matches."
Two of a kind, suited, shuffled and stalling

And the voices of all the others
Melted to a background drone
Though the light played on many faces
We were together, alone

"I took to this world like a bat takes to daylight,
Or a firefly takes to the raging sea.
But I've heard the music and distant silver singing
And, I've been clinging to it desperately."

Her sarcastic smile took a while to change
Less guarded and cautious, at ease
She said,”I’ve loved before but it hurt me more
To stay with you, so I had to leave"

And the voices of all the others
Melted to a background drone
Though the light played on many faces
We were together, alone

FLYING CARS

Spiderwebs on the jungle gym
Can you remember when you were that thin
Drive to the beach in your beat up car
Washing dishes won't get you too far

Somebody ran off with our dignity
Take off your shirt and the money's free
A Cadillac full of Tommy guns
Used to be we were the lucky ones

It's not the same today
As it was yesterday
I feel so alone
Sometimes
The stars would shine
The Beatle's number 9
Gave me the creeps
Every time
They'll be no flying cars
In my life time

Dark Shadows swept the neighborhood
Always felt so misunderstood
Down in the dirt with a garden hose
Digging tunnels to where nobody knows

Somebody took off with our innocence
From pipe dreams to ambivalence
A pack of hounds and a pack of lies
The revolution must be digitized

It's not the same today
As it was yesterday
I feel so alone
Sometimes
The stars would shine
The Beatle's number 9
Gave me the creeps
Every time
They'll be no flying cars
In my lifetime

Two thousand years passed and no return
Nobody disappeared, nobody burned
Looks like tomorrow's just another day
Another chance to blow it all away

It's not the same today
As it was yesterday
I feel so alone
Sometimes
The stars would shine
The Beatle's number 9
Gave me the creeps
Every time
They'll be no flying cars
In my lifetime

PUNCH IN THE HEART

There's a reason

I asked you not to come 'round here any more

But you won't listen,  you never listen do you?
My head is full of

Conflicting feelings burning through my soul
And I can't erase them, I can't explain it to you

Things change
It's like a punch in the heart
Things change
And I'm right back at the start
Feels like a punch in the heart

You were always right where I thought you wanted to be
You had my number, you had my number down
Now this love's a bust
And I don't think you're too good for me

And I get muddled when you keep coming around

Things change

It's like a punch in the heart
Things change
And I'm right back at the start
Feels like a punch in the heart

I'm so tired all the time
Blackbirds in my head
I'll bet you think you're wearing me down
But it's wearing me out instead

Things change
It's like a punch in the heart
Things change
And I'm right back at the start
Feels like a punch in the heart

MAKE-BELIEVE LOVE

Our make-believe love, I'll miss
I imagined we kissed
On a night that never happened

Our make-believe love, was cool
Guess I was being a fool
But now I don't remember

I thought we might make it the truth
But it's not standing up to the proof

Oh, our make-believe love

Our make-believe love, you can't lose
Now I'm feeling confused
'Bout what I should I be feeling
Our make-believe love, I'll miss
I imagined we kissed
On a night that never happened

FICTION

I keep falling over
Lies
I keep running into
Alibis
Fiction is causing me friction
'Cause I can't pull the truth
From the shadows
And who knows
There might be nothing to see
But I don't think it's just me

I can't help seeing
Signs
All I keep hearing is
Never-mind

Fiction becomes an
Addiction because you
Can't tell the truth
From the shadows
And you know
There might be something to see
Something wrong with me

OFFICIALLY STRANGE

You could throw it all away
On fragrance and memory
Magnetism and darkness
Drowning in wild energy

You said,"Time forgives temptation."
I could believe you

And it's strange
Officially strange

Eyes make contact in the night
The tap dance of attraction
Unidentified feeling objects
Interaction and distraction
You said,"I could make it better."
I want to believe you

And it's strange
Officially strange

Soul party wallflowers smile
Nothing's forbidden in a dream
Windows and mirrors beguile
Swallow up the in-between
You said," The heat is getting to me."
I believe I feel it too

And it's strange
Officially strange
